Mallika Sherawat, better known as Bollywood’s Kissing Queen is the perfect example of a small town girl making it big. Born to conservative parents in Rohtak, Haryana, Mallika’s real name happens to be Reema Lamba. The actress completed her graduation from Delhi University and became an airhostess. She got married to Pilot Karan Singh Gill and soon got married to him, eventually divorcing him. Right after the divorce, Mallika shifted to Mumbai in the quest of becoming an actress.
Mallika started doing commercial campaigns (including Santro and 7Up ad films) and first showed up on screen in a music video called Lak Tunoo by Surjit Bindrakhia. Her film debut was in the form of Jeena Sirf Mere Liye in 2002 in which she was credited as Reema Lamba and not Mallika Sherawat. In 2003, the actress stunned the audience with her provocative performance in the movie Khwahish. In the movie the actress locks lips with actor Himanshu Malik an outrageous 17 times. This led her to being labelled as “The Sex Queen Of Bollywood” and “Bollywood Bombshell”. In 2004, the sex queen busted hypocrisy again – this time in Murder, which was full of sensual scenes and by Indian Standards it was pretty racy.
Mallika’s performance in Murder as a woman with an extra matrital affair was well appreciated and Murder went on to be one of the biggest hits of the year. The actress also received a nomination for the Best Actress Award at the Zee Cine Awards. In 2005, super star Jackie Chan approached Mallika Sherawat offering her a small role in his movie The Myth, which the actress accepted. She appeared in revealing clothes in the movie as well as the Cannes Film Festival, to promote the film.
Since the beginning of her career, it has been noted that Mallika Sherawat is an extrovert and speaks out and literally talks with her body. All the critics who said that Mallika Sherawat could not act and is only an item girl were proved wrong after the release of Pyaar Ke Side Effects. After her performance in Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Mallika was labelled as an actress rather than an item girl.
Mallika made headlines again when it was leaked that she was paid a mind blowing Rs 1.5 crore for doing an item song in the movie Aap Ka Suroor. In 2006, she was listed as number 4 by UK magazine Eastern Eye in the list of “Asia's Sexiest Women”. Apart from that, she has been voted as one of Asia's 100 most beautiful people by the Hong Kong based fashion and beauty magazine, Cover. Now, Mallika has several films under production such as Welcome, Dasavatharam, Fauj Mein Mauj and Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam. Apart from these, there is also a Hollywood movie – Unveiled, in production.
Mallika has also had her share of controversies. In 2006 New Year’s Eve, she was performing in the hotel J.W. Marriot in Mumbai and a social activist tried to urge the police to file a complaint against her for wearing indecent and suggestive clothes. When Mallika was criticized for doing kissing scenes, she said that she is not a nun and if an actor can enjoy the kiss, then why can’t she enjoy it. Mallika has been featured on the cover of various magazines including Filmfare, Femina, Man’s World, Cosmopolitan and London magazine Snoop. Apart from these, she was also the first Indian women to get an offer from Playboy magazine to pose nude for them and appear on the cover.
